Hosam El Sokkari
Head of Audience
Yahoo! Middle East
Hosam El Sokkari joined Yahoo! in spring 2010. He is currently working with various Yahoo! teams to build a richer content portfolio for Yahoo! Middle East Arabic and English gateways, merge user experience across platforms and develop a stronger tie between media and community channels.
Previously, he spent 15 years with the BBC. The first Arab to become head of BBC Arabic, he helped the channel evolve into an integrated multi-platform operation offering radio, online, digital services and a 24/7 television news channel. He helped introduce user-generated content as an integrated part of BBC Arabic programming, and his show, “Noqtat Hewar”, became a multimedia interactive offering whose model was adopted elsewhere in the BBC. Shortly before joining Yahoo! he developed and launched the “710 Greenwich” project, which combined TV programming with a strong social media experience.
In 1996, Mr El Sokkari joined Al Jazeera as a member of its launch team, establishing and presenting one of the channel’s flagship programmes. Before that, he was a reporter and columnist as well as a science and technology editor for a number of pan-Arab publications, introducing internet journalism to print media in the Arab world, while his BBC programme, “The Electronic Café Tales”, brought IT and web issues to the fore of the Arab public debate. He also presented news and current affairs programmes.
Mr El Sokkari was named by Digital Broadcast magazine as one of "the 20 individuals shaping the region’s digital media, broadcast and telecommunications industries", and has appeared several times on Arabian Business magazine’s list of the world's most influential Arabs. Educated in Cairo, Berlin and London, he holds a degree in pharmaceutical sciences and an MSc in information systems from the London School of Economics.
